AjaxBerlee 1.3a WordPress Theme

CHANGES

  • FEATURE: Better visitor experience when clicking on a link/search or commenting. Especially when the server or the connection is slow. It is configurable in the WP Admin Panel. Thanks to Vijayendra Mohanty for suggesting it
  • FEATURE: You can now disable the Left-Sidebar to have a bigger main column. Thanks to Becky Lai for the idea that is showed on www.sockparade.com

  • FEATURE: About text and link is configurable in WordPress Admin Panel
  • ENHANCEMENT: The number of Recent Posts in the Slide Ticker is now configurable.
  • ENHANCEMENT: The post tags are now also in the post itself.
  • ENHANCEMENT: Code for the WP Ajax Connector Framework is now in it own files.. It also has its own Admin Panel page.
  • ENHANCEMENT: The comment submit button is immediately disabled when your clicked on it, so double clicks because the visitor is inpatient can not occur.
  • ENHANCEMENT: History (back and forward navigation) in Internet Explorer finally works! It was really a pain to get the workaround working right with a minimum amount of coding…
  • BUGFIX: An error message can be displayed if something went wrong with the comment submitting.
Merged the commenting code of WordPress 2.2 which should be backwards compatible.
  • BUGFIX: Double title in Categories when not using widgets. Thanks to Martin Böttinger for reporting it. I failed to notice it :(
  • BUGFIX: Image preloading didn’t really loaded all images on a very fast visitor pc.
  • BUGFIX: Anchors should now be working right (not getting a 404 page not found anymore)
  • VISUAL: Changed the bullet.gif so It won’t contain a dot inside… Didn’t really like it :)

Sorry, no notes on 1.3 to 1.3a I was too busy fixing bugs and lost track of all the changes committed :)

Upgrade note:
If you are updating from 1.2, please note that some files have been renamed! Also, if you enabled the Slide Ticker on your site, please go to the WP Admin Panel -> Presentation -> AjaxBerlee Options and change the value of the Slide Ticker to a number, for example 15.
You also might want to change the about text since it is now controlled in the WP Admin Panel

Wow, what a nice theme! I spent hours looking for a suitable theme for a new site I have in mind, and this one is perfect. I hope you’ll post this new version after 52 minutes (e.g. tomorrow for dutch readers ;-)

Antoinne / May 19th, 2007, 10:10 pm

I’m looking forward to it. I was practicing with in on my server at home but for some reason wasn’t sure what the right page was as it does not show up anywhere.

This is nearly a perfect theme for me so I’ll check back for tomorrows version.

cooper / May 21st, 2007, 12:13 am

First of all, I want to congratulate you for creating one of the best WordPress themes I have ever seen. It is a ot of what I was looking for.

But I have a question. I am no expert, but doesn’t a page’s search-engine-friendliness depend on URLs. Does that get affected because AjaxBerlee puts a # in the middle of all URLs?

Just curious.

Also, is there a way to have Ajax Berlee entirely HTML based. WITH the search function alone AJAXified?

vijay / May 22nd, 2007, 1:28 pm

Thank you..

I am going to quote myself from My improved website response with Ajax :

Backwards compatibility was a key requirement for me. Since Google, MSN search, yahoo and other search spider bots don’t understand the the first thing about JavaScript or cookies. And, of course, the security nutheads (people that read security bulletins and don’t mitigate) that disables JavaScript because they think they are safer off. [......]

JavaScript is responsible for turning the normal A HREF links to an ajax request in the background. This way it’s fully backwards compatible… Even if JavaScript works and even if the ajax request fails, It will switch to the old A HREF link.

See how my site is indexed in Google and notice there aren’t any #’s

At this point there is no option to disable only Ajax page loading. (If the WP Ajax Connector Framework is disabled, the Instant Search and Instant Commenting are also disabled) If more people want to disable only ajax page loading please stand up and say so :)

Nico / May 22nd, 2007, 4:59 pm

Thanks for that assurance!

vijay / May 23rd, 2007, 10:25 pm

Man, his template is really perfect (even with 1.3 running ;-)

One feature request though, support for wordpress language files. Is that something on your todo e.g. wanted list?

Antoinne / May 29th, 2007, 8:08 pm

No it wasn’t…

But now it is!
It will be in the 1.4 release if I can get it to work… (1.3a will probably be released tomorrow or the day after..)

Nico / May 30th, 2007, 6:43 pm

Tnx for the speedy and positive reply ;-)

Antoinne / May 30th, 2007, 9:01 pm

Really love your theme. Is it possible to put a link to Comments just bellow the title post?

Incredible good work. Thank you very much, Nico.

Marco / June 4th, 2007, 12:39 pm

Every time i open my WP i see the next message:

“Warning: ob_start() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler ‘ob_gzhandler’ cannot be used after ‘URL-Rewriter’ in /home/XXXX/public_html/blog/wp-includes/functions.php on line 419″

After a refresh, it seems that everything is O.K… but when i open again my browser, the same message is showed again.

I’ve tried in IE, Firefox and Opera.

M / June 4th, 2007, 6:14 pm

It seems i’ve solved the problem reported before.. The problem is in the activation of compressing articles (gzip), in WP options.

No more errors now.. :)

M / June 4th, 2007, 6:18 pm

Nico, as promised here is some first problems I ran into with your theme:

- Lightbox doesn’t work also, and when picture opens in browser you can’t browse back. You can see the problem here. This problem is really disturbing :(
- Footnotes / linknotes (links associated with them) don’t work. You can see the problem here.

Milan'che / June 8th, 2007, 5:06 pm

@Marco: Do you mean the links like in the original Brajeshwar theme?

@Milan’che: I will look into it… Lightbox is conflicting with WP ACF because it uses the same link conversion… I can’t promise anything… but it shouldn’t be a lot of code modifications…

I have no idea about the footnotes problem… but I will look into it also…

Update: Sorry, I forgot to type n’t … Lightbox is a plugin that is very often used in wordpress installations… Thats why I want to make it compatible… I will also look into the back problem…

Nico / June 9th, 2007, 12:14 pm

@Nico ok, but let’s just forget about Lightbox (I can survive that) and focus on the problem when user clicks on an image that opens in that browser window in full size. At that moment there is no easy way to browse back to the article – hitting the back button just causes the image to reload.

Milan'che / June 9th, 2007, 2:46 pm

Hi Nico, I’ve tried your theme, but when I activate it the links don’t work anymore. For example, if the link is http://www.sarco.com.ar/blog/index.php/2007/01/23/agile-no-es-un-falso-dilema-agile-is-not-a-false-dilemma when I click on it it will instead go to http://www.sarco.com.ar/blog/#//2007/01/23/agile-no-es-un-falso-dilema-agile-is-not-a-false-dilemma which is obviously not found.
Why is this happenning? Did I forgot to configure something? I’m using WP 2.2, AjaxBerlee 1.3a on PHP 4.4.7
Thanks

Alex / June 11th, 2007, 2:02 pm

No, you probably changed the permalink setting….because now it’s not using permalinks anymore and its working …. You probably need to refresh the page when you make a switch from permalink to non permalink…

That why you got a 404 error… the # is normal… see my comments in the 1.2 article for more information about it…

Also Fiddler says that your webserver is sending junk in http headers… The line with Server: can’t be empty!

Nico / June 11th, 2007, 2:08 pm

i would really like to see lightbox compatability with this theme as well!

jerse / June 12th, 2007, 4:44 pm

Jerse, It will be in 1.4… its working perfectly on my testsite, and almost perfect on http://blog.m2-j.info … the site of Milan’che..

If you wan’t to start using lightbox in combination with the theme right now, and can’t wait for 1.4… please mail me… I will send you a modified acf.js … or since you still use 1.2 .. a modified ajax.js

Nico / June 13th, 2007, 11:04 pm

I’m kind of having a tough time with images on my site, and some links, whenever I click on them, they never load, instead it takes you back to the index, I can disable the AJAX framework and they will load then, but I would like to try and make it work with the AJAX…

Any idea what’s wrong?

Freijja / June 14th, 2007, 12:52 am

I am going to mail to try to solve these issues…

Nico / June 14th, 2007, 9:41 pm

Nico,
it would be nice if you would also implement WP Ajax Edit Comments or support for it. It doesnt work with your theme.

Milan'che / June 18th, 2007, 8:03 pm

Milan’che,

Quote from the WP Ajax Edit Comment site:

Since the plugin requires JavaScript and the DOM (Document Object Model), Ajax-type posted comments will not be editable until the user makes a refresh. Future versions may allow hooks for other plugin authors to tap into, but this plugin is so early in its release that this isn’t a possibility quite yet. For now, those that allow Ajax-type posted comments will only allow the comments to be edited as admin.

So, No hooks…. This makes it nearly impossible to make it compatible… The plugin might be working if Ajax Commenting is switched off in the WP ACF options..

But Milan’che, please take this in account… Lightbox is using prototype framework and WP Ajax Edit Commenting is using jQuery… Those are big Ajax frameworks… this really slows down the redendering on clients…

WP ACF was designed by me to be so light as possible… the Javascript was optimized to run and download as fast as possible… (4,3 KB) While jQuery is 19KB slowly compressed and Prototype is over 50KB

So if you get performance problems you might want to reconsider your activated plugins :)

Nico / June 18th, 2007, 8:58 pm

hi,
thank you for this nice theme :)
I would like to make contuttopdf plugin to work with it.
I figured out that using acf framework enabled I get an error message because of the # in the url. With acf disabled pdf generation works fine
I tried several hacks on trying throw an exception testing on “output=pdf” to get instead of baseurl/#/output=pdf an baseurl/output=pdf which renders the pdf..
Maybe it’s too late in the night to figure it out.
Do you know a workaround for it?

3.14a / June 22nd, 2007, 12:33 am

First i want to say, this is an amazing theme and i thank you for all your work on it! Second, what font is used for the title.gif side thing on the left?

jackyyll / June 22nd, 2007, 8:15 pm

I keep getting an error when i first load the page… But when i refresh, all is good. How do i fix this error:

Warning: ini_set() [function.ini-set]: A session is active. You cannot change the session module’s ini settings at this time. in /home/jackyyll/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/ajaxberlee-2/acf-functions.php on line 190

jackyyll / June 23rd, 2007, 3:30 am

thank for the nice theme .But I get an error when i use the plugins named eventcalendar’. in sidebar. I cant’ change the date by clicking the next or the pre month button. when i clicking it , a message appear in the index column like below :

Page not found
Page wordpress/javascript:ec3.go_prev() was not found.
The page may be moved or more likely, you did something wrong :) , please take a look at the search results

Yen / June 25th, 2007, 12:57 am

@ JackYYLL: seems you solved the php error yourself… No Idea about the font.. I will ask my sister (since she made the title.gif)

@3.14a and Yen: I will look into it…

Nico / June 25th, 2007, 10:55 pm

Hello! Thanks for a great theme. I have some problems with the instant search function. I have enabled the WP Ajax Connector and the Instant Search option at the administrator backend, but it is still not showing. What can be wrong?

H.K / June 26th, 2007, 9:16 pm

Ok… I figured it out. From what I can see, I cannot put any widgets on the left sidebar if I want to show the Instant Search function. Also, placing for example calendar in the left sidebar really mess up the display of the theme…

H.K / June 26th, 2007, 9:19 pm

H.K., There is a Instant Search widget plugin in the zip file… If you use widgets, you have to use the Instant Search widget aswell…

really love this theme..

but when the link have #, all my advertising (adsense&advertlets) not show

any hint ?

skycrew / August 6th, 2007, 1:43 pm

I am sorry, Adsense is not supported.
See http://nico.berlee.nl/adsense-and-ajax-not-a-happy-combination/ why not…

In the AjaxBerlee 1.1 post comment I explained about the # in the url:
Ajax is a technique to load some data from a website using javascript without really leaving the page. Data is requested and just pushed into div’s (like col-main). So no real page load, and only data that is needs to be refreshed is send to the client… (not the whole page)

This leaves you with a problem when you want to bookmark a page. Since there is no way to know for the browser on which page you really are. That’s where the # kicks in… I can’t really change the url… but I can add an # to it and I can change everything after the #
In order to bookmark a page… The # and everything after it, is enough for the javascript to know how to put the page in the formal ‘state’.

Hi Nico. Thanks alot for working on this theme.

I have a question and i hope you can reply it.

1. Can i disable Ajax-Script/Loading on this theme but still use Ajax-Instant Search? If cant, any advices/guides to implement a non-Ajax search function on this theme?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Great template! I love it, but for me I wanted the main colum to be 500px wide. I have no idea what I’m doing, any suggestions? I think I may have done it, but the right column doesn’t want to cooperate in some browsers. Has anyone made a version of this template with the columns both on the right and the main column 500px wide. I’d appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks so much and keep up the great work.

craig / August 23rd, 2007, 3:16 pm

“Nico / May 22nd, 2007, 16:59 : If more people want to disable only ajax page loading please stand up and say so”

Firstly, thanks for this theme.

I would support 100% to have an option to disable the Ajax-page loading. Its because alot ppl face problems using Ajax-page loading.

Thanks again. Pls update us.

Kev / August 24th, 2007, 9:55 am

Well actually I already build it in in the new version 1.4… but thats not exactly finished… I stopped developing after I finaly bought my own apartment…

I will pick up developing this weekend…

And Kev, the ajax loading is unique to wordpress themes… In 1.4 it will be more compatible with plugins and work better in various situations…

@ Craig, I am going to quote myself:

About the widening of the main column… Yes it’s possible. But it involves wrap.gif, latest.gif and a lot of CSS changes. In version 1.3 there will be an option in the WP-admin pages so the left sidebar can be disabled… (which was a great idea from Jerse… see http://www.sockparade.com)

Basically you can change the width number of col-main. Then add the widthnumber of col-main + width of col-left + width of col-right + 20 and put that value into the width of #container

The lines are in wrap.gif… so you have to change position of the right dot….

Thats not all.. since your site now looks weird. The latest grey bar must also made wider.. Change the width in #post-latest and change the latest.gif.

Now you are done, but be carefull! Non logical values of the width will lead to incorrect display of your site in either IE6, IE7, Firefox or Opera… So you please don’t guess values, but substract and add values compared to other values… as I just explained.

Nico / August 24th, 2007, 9:50 pm

Thanks for your reply.

Anyway, i would be really appreciate if there is a choice in the admin panel to On/Off Ajax-page loading.

KEV / August 26th, 2007, 7:03 am

Can a .htaccess file be used to reemove the # from URL’s or will this break it?

Great looking theme by the way :)

Michael / August 30th, 2007, 3:02 pm

Having issue with links.

Address bar says this: http://www.organizedshoppers.com/shopping/#/category/shop-by-department/accessories

But results say this:
Page not found
Page shopping/category/shop-by-department/accessories was not found.
The page may be moved or more likely, you did something wrong :) , please take a look at the search results

As long as I leave my permalinks set at “default” it’s fine but if I make them pretty or change them in any way, none of my links (categories, articles, pages, etc) work at all. I realize AJAX requires the #’s but is there a way to change this and still have it work? Or do I just need to leave it at default and have these: http://www.organizedshoppers.com/shopping/?p=123

Chris / September 1st, 2007, 5:49 am

@Kev: My power supply in my computer broke a week ago… I just received a new one… So I try to get 1.4 out as soon as possible..

@Michael: .htaccess has no influence in the # as # are not part of the the server request.

@ Chris: Make sure that the url settings in the wordpress admin panel are correct. I am almost positive that they aren’t.

See http://nico.berlee.nl/files/2007/05/url.gif
and http://nico.berlee.nl/ajaxberlee-11-wordpress-theme/ for a more detailed explaination

Nico / September 1st, 2007, 2:57 pm

Thanks alot, Nico. Will be anticipating version 1.4 :)

KEV / September 2nd, 2007, 12:07 pm

Nico,

I’m having the same issue as Alex. My permalink settings weren’t changed, but a /#/ directory is being placed before my categories, as well. I disabled the AJAX Connector Framework, and everything went back to normal.

Sorry to bug you, but not sure what I’m missing here…

Thanks for making this great template!

Thank you for a fantastic theme.
Or it would be if I could get the links to work.
http://michaelhaupt.com/blog/

I am using WP2.3 could that be the problem?

All links to Pages work correctly, but when clicking on a Post link, or a Read More link, the URL changes correctly (including the #), but nothing loads.

The only WP ACF option which is Disabled is WP Ajax Client side caching.

PHP version: 4.4.4
MySQL version: 4.1.22-standard

Any pointers greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,

Must Have Wordpress Plugins | En Route to Mastery / September 27th, 2007, 7:28 am

Hi! Love your theme! I am having one problem that I hope you can help me with. I can’t seem to get a Tags archive or a separate archive page to work. (the archive widget works fine.)

I noticed in both page templates (the archive.php and tag.php) that there is a note to “set $post so that the date will work.” Do I need to change something in these page templates so that the archive function will work.

When I create an archive page or try to create a tag cloud page based on the template, I get a few lines that make a reference to September 2007 (the current month) but no archives or tag cloud. I am already using the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin.

Cat / October 1st, 2007, 2:11 am

Hi, again,

Also noticed that my Categories widget and Calendar widget are also not working. All my recent posts are still displayed when an individual category is clicked. And, I get no posts, only a line indicating the date September 2007 when I click a date in the calendar that indicates there are posts that day.

What have I done wrong?

Cat / October 1st, 2007, 3:19 am

Sorry to keep posting. I disabled the AJAX Connector Framework and now the Categories widget works, but the basic search box doesn’t, it just keeps returning the index page. I disabled Instant Search, this is just the basic WordPress search box.

Hi Nico!

Great job! just 2 issues:

1. Tags:

(a) The tags from the tag cloud does not retrieve the posts related to the tag, it ignores the action of clicking on them.

(b) The tags also often over limit the space of the right column overlapping over the central, sometimes even hiding a part of the post text.

2. There is no direct “edit” link at each post when one is logged-on as administrator, so it is a pain to edit a post, specially if they are old.

Hope you can address this issues. Everything else is just great.

egalois / November 16th, 2007, 1:00 pm

Other thing. Every link adds a sharp symbol that makes that some functions does not work properly. How can I fix that? For instance, feedburner does not work well and each time I want to get into my Admin place I have to erase the sharp from the link…

Thanks!

Hi, man! Great job makin’ a nice and fast theme.
Found some bugs, like
- when WP ACP is ON theme doesn’t work properly with NextGen Gallery. Cannot view pictures. I had to disable ACF which i think is really fast and great.
- filling About Box with Cyrillic letters produces a real mess in a blog. Some kinda bug with coding i think….

Hope you’ll have a time to fix, making 1.4.
Thanx again for that you’ve done.
Luck.

Hello NICO!

First of all, Your Theme is really Great!

And I wish to use Lightbox with it. :)

My question is. When comes the 1.4 version ?
Or can you send me a modified ACF.JS
so I can use Lightbox ?

Thanks a lot!

Can I use this with collapsible category and archive lists, via the WP-dTree plugin?

My site is nearly customized to my delight, but I’ve got two questions:

1) is it possible to make the title (i.e., the vertical-running banner on the left) “attached” rather than relative, so it stays a set distance from the main text area?

2) is it possible to make the post body text larger but leave all the other text the same?

Thanks for a fantastic theme, Nico — nothing else comes close to my needs and tastes.

Cheers,

Brandon

Great theme! I like the way that the content in your columns is organized; it is not a strain to the eyes, nor do I believe it is visually confusing. In my opinion it’s a breakway from the common blog layout. Overall it’s simple and clean–just what I’m looking for in a blog theme.

Nico – This is a great looking template and the functionality is awesome, but how do you change the top right hand section that says “About.” My default setup says, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Quisque sed felis. ….”

Thanks in advance!

Mike / May 15th, 2008, 1:12 am

Great work you are doing with this theme!
Quick question.
Everything works fine in IE.
Firefox and safari problem– when you hit a link all I get is the blue gear turning in the upper left and then it just hangs.

Any reason for that? Maybe I configured it wrong…

Thanks in advance
Nick

Thanks for the great design, really clean. I’m also having trouble with the vertical name on the left. Two things;

1. How do I change it to my blogs name?
2. How do I keep it relative to the text or always visible in the window as someone scrolls?

Thanks,

Vuxes / July 2nd, 2008, 4:54 pm

Hi Nico,

Congrats on a great theme, I would love to use it but when I try and turn on the WP Ajax Connector Framework to allow ajax search and menu things dont work. The ajax icon in the top left just keeps spinning and it puts a #/ in the url. When I hover over a link it looks correct in the browser e.g …/?page_id=59 but when I click the link it turns out to be #/page_id=59 and it does not load the page. It works fine if I turn off the WP Ajax Connector Framework but then the instant search does not work…. any ideas? I have looked everywhere for a soln.

Thanks :)

andrew / July 28th, 2008, 9:07 pm

Hey mate, there seems to be a little bug over here. Not sure how we can get it resolved.

This bug seems to only affect Firefox browsers. Didn’t try on Opera and Safari though.

When the “WP Ajax Connector Framework” is enabled, the generated links doesn’t work. When you click on any of the links on the blog, it will insert a “#” into the original URL.

i.e (http://www.testmeout.com/test-this-article/ will be parsed to http://www.testmeout.com/#/test-this-article/)

Any idea why is this happening and how do we work around it?

When tested with Internet explorer, it works perfectly fine even with the WP Ajax Connector Framework enabled.

There was a problem!
At this time, Mail Options is not supported by browsers that have javascript disabled. We are actively looking into this and hope to have it fixed as soon as possible.

Anonymous / September 20th, 2008, 3:27 pm

Hey, [re Joseph July 2nd 2008], I get the same problem although it seems to work fine even with WP Ajax connector turned on while testing on XAMPP platform. As soon as I changed to another server platform (Zend) the url rewrites breaks unless I turn off WP Ajax connector.

What’s going on??

I am currently using your theme, but having trouble with IMG links. I click on the image for bigger version, it loads it up changing the page, and then the back button won’t work – something to do with the URL maybe? I haven’t modifed the theme settings too much, just the layout. Can you help me out here?

Nick Young / October 11th, 2008, 10:56 pm

thanks for the post.

simon / October 12th, 2008, 11:34 am

Ok I narrowed it down to IE vs FF.

I create a hyperlink to a PDF file > when I click on it, in IE I can click the back button and get to the previous page, but in FF when I click the back button it gets fooled by the url for some reason.

This theme does not work with PHP 5.3.1

CYTech / January 14th, 2010, 4:26 am

Actually I just got the theme working on PHP 5.3.1.

You just need to change “if (!session_is_registered(“from_frontpage”))” without the quotes in files acf-functions.php, acf.php and ajax.php to “if ( !empty($_SESSION['from_frontpage']) )” without the quotes.

CYTech / January 14th, 2010, 4:33 am

is there a way to separate theme from the Wp Ajax Connector?
Your template is cool but I want to be able to install and use your tecnology in many templates.
this is not simple just beacause the scheme (right sidebar, etc..).
Thanks!

I’m having problems with Tags.

I disabled the Ajax Connector Framework because I don’t like the added # signs in URLs but it seems to have messed up some tag stuff.

At first I was having an issue with tag pages showing up. Whenever I pressed a tag it would take me to a page with a Fatal error on it. I fixed it by removing a piece of code, now the tag pages show up.

Now I’m having a problem with tags showing up on my single post pages. For some reason it won’t show the TAG(s): tag1,tag2,tag3 list under Filed Under and I can’t figure out why. I think it has something to do with the statement:

but when I removed it it creates a fatal error for the post. I also tried to replace the entire string:

TAG(s):

with

to see if it was the UTW_ShowTagsForCurrentPost that was causing the problem but that created a fatal error as well.

Please help me get tags to show on my Single Posts because I don’t want to have to use a MASSIVE tag cloud for this site.
